How Do Violin Lessons Work At Enny’s Music School?

Lesson Flow

Lessons in this age range tend to be a varied musical experience. Everything is tailored to the music level & attention span of the child.

The child will spend the time playing short & simple songs on the violin but also trying a variety of different instruments such as the drums, ukulele, piano, accordion, maracas, triangle, bells, etc). This keeps the child engaged and having fun while gaining experience with a variety of instruments. Through this musical experience we learn the child’s natural talent and if they are interested in violin or another instrument.

As we learn more about your child’s interests, we begin to tailor these musical experiences to the specific instrument(s) they would like to eventually focus on.

Near the end of the lesson we end with some FUN music table games where your child gets to “fish”, complete musical puzzles, and at the end gets to choose a prize from the Treasure Box! 🙂

Warmups

For this age range we start with Warmups (easy/fun violin songs) so that the student can start playing songs right away. The purpose is to get your child’s brain used to memorizing songs. We start with short & simple songs and increase the difficulty overtime.

These warmups help develop finger agility via repetition. Some children have fun with this and add their own flourishes and create their own versions. This ensures they can play something when they pick up their violin which boosts their self-confidence that they can actually play something!

Assigned Lesson book & writing book by levels.

These lesson books take the student from easy to intermediate, to advanced. They’ll learn how to read music, music theory, technique, all the fundamentals.

Favorite Song(s) Folder

To keep the child motivated to continue learning & playing violin I teach them how to play something fun that they like. I’ll ask the student what stong they’d like to play on the violin and we find the sheet music for it and print it. Sometimes this is provided by Mrs. Enny, other times the parents buy the sheet music.

Fun Time – Music table games (younger kids) or Drums

Depending on the age of the student, we will often finish the lesson with some “fun time”. Fishing games, music alphabet, rhythms, puzzles, memory games, drums.

Treasure Box (each class)

At the end of the class, some younger students (and occasionally older students) still enjoy getting something from Treasure Box 🙂

For an intermediate/advanced student, the majority of the lesson is focused on helping them fine-tune each section of their favorite song until they’re able to play it fluently without pausing and by memory. Once that song or songs has been mastered, we move onto the next challenge (another favorite song!)

These songs can then be showcased by the student at our annual recital here in Victoria, TX in front of a group of fellow students, parents, grandparents, and friends (optional).

Q: How many violin lessons should my child (or I) take each month?

At least one lesson each week is recommended (4 lessons per month) in order to make consistent progress.

Q: How often should my child (or I) practice the violin?

A minimum of 5 days a week and at least 30 minutes per day.

If the student is younger, they can start with 10-15 minutes per day and slowly increase it until they can get to the full 30 minute practice.
